NOTES FOR 1950 VASHON-MAURY ISLAND FEDERAL CENSUS DATA

This file presents summary information from the 1950 U.S. Census for Vashon-Maury Island (VMI).  Other than total population no other information could be found for all of Vashon-Maury Island.  The existence of two Census Tracts: 0022 (northern half of the Island) and 0023 (southern half of the Island) is noted within Census documentation; however no published documents could be found which provide information on Census Tract 0022.  What is presented here is summary data for Census Tract 0023 only.  The researchers attached to this website continue to search for information from the missing 1950 VMI Census Tract.  If any additional data can be located, they will be posted on the Census Project website.

In 1950, the Census reference day was April 1, 1950.  The Census Bureau switched from an information recording system using pen and paper to one that utilized “cards” (conversation with staff of the National Archives and Records Administration Seattle Office, January 30, 2014).  Similar to earlier Censuses, collected information was recorded by trained Census Enumerators.

Published 1950 Census reports from the Census Bureau are available through the following website:  http://www.census.gov/prod/www/decennial.html.  Publications do not provide any information specific to Vashon-Maury Island.  Details on how the 1950 Census was conducted and changes from previous Censuses can be found at: https://www.census.gov/history/www/through_the_decades/overview/.  Similar information for every U.S. Census is provided at this location.

Specific data runs for Vashon-Maury Island 1950 Census information may be requested from the National Historical Geographic Information System, administered by the University of Minnesota Population Center (funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health).  They may be reached at: https://www.nhgis.org/.
